Prof. Antonio Ferrer Montiel holds a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Alicante. He was appointed as full Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the University Miguel Hernández (Elche) in 2007, and Director of the Institute of Molecular and Cellular Biology since 2011. His work has focused on the field of sensory neurobiology, principally on the molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to chronic pain, with a particular interest in cancer and chemotherapy-induced pain. He is also involved in entrepreneurial activity, is the co-founder of 2 spin-offs and 2 start-up companies, and the inventor of 20 patents. He currently has 2 products in clinical development (Phase II) and one in pre-clinical. He was elected President of the Spanish Society of Biophysics in 2014, and he has been the coordinator of the Spanish Network on Ion Channels since 2008. He was also elected as a member of the University Miguel Hernández Governance Board in 2015.
